I shall be released versions

Postby cry tuff » Fri Jan 26, 2018 3:17 am

I was listening to the Robert Elms show on radio London last week and he has a slot called back to back where he plays two versions of the same song and people vote for their favourite.
The track played was 'I shall be released' and the versions were by the Band and Nina Simone. I think the Band won.
I have a version of this track by Norah Dean called 'I shall be free' in my opinion a much better version than the above.
For years I had thought the Norah Dean track to be an original as it credits her as written by on the single and it was only when a friend played the Band version one day that I realised it was a cover

Does anyone know any other reggae versions of this track, I think I have a version by the Maytones somewhere.

I think there is a few. Some that comes to mind is from the early 90s by Sanchez. Also a deejay version 'God a Come' - Sanchez and Macka B.
Legal thief, by Cutty Ranks is another deejay version.
Freddie McGregor also covered the tune at Studio One.

There's an enjoyable cut by Wayne Jarrett on TR:

But I must thank you for sharing that Nora Dean cut. Never heard it before and what a great cut it is. She definitely made it her own.

Is the Lee Perry version available on legit CD??? I love the Studio One version, would be good to compare and contrast.

Oh yes, I see it is on 'Party Time'. Thanks. Is a dub available?
Cheers!

The Nora Dean song is entirely different than the Dylan song (who wrote the song covered by The Band, Nina Simone, Heptones, etc.etc......). Different lyrics, different chords, different melody. The only thing the two songs share are the lyrics "any day now, I shall be......".

Toots also wrote a song called "I Shall Be Free" that borrowed more from the Dylan tune, and as such shares compositional credit with him. But Dean's can hardly be called the "best version" of "I Shall Be Released" when it's a different song altogether. Listen carefully and you will see what I mean.

Dylan's tune is powerful, which is why it's been covered by so many artists in so many musical genres.

Hi Benj, I don't know the track myself but this excellent site reveals a dub...

http://upsetter.smokeyroom.net/riddimsh ... leased.htm

just not on CD. Unless one of those three CD releases has a Discomix? Anyone know?

A lot more versions than I thought of this tune,
The Heptones/Lee Perry is very good.

I think Finbar is correct when he says the Norah Dean song is not a cover as she does only use part of the chorus (I don't really know much about the Band or Bob Dylan, not really my music)

So Norah Dean deserves full credit for this fine song.

Does anyone know anything about the Sir Derricks One Stop, label I have heard one other release and that was excellent too
Derrick certainly knew his stuff
I think this is the only record I have with a label that offers - Records and Motor Spares
Obviously Derrick didn't want to put all his eggs in one basket
